Load Bearing Shelf Angles

By installing StoneClip Shelf Angles at each floor level, all of the dead load of the cladding on each level is transferred down to them (that is the weight that is not taken up by intermediate Adjustable StoneClips in that level of wall cladding). In actual fact, the intermediate StoneClips carry their own weight and there should be nil transferred down, but in actual fact this is support from floor to ceiling is in case of an catastrophe or such like.

When cladding above 5 floors high it is noted that all the intermediate StoneClips be replaced with StoneClip Shelf Angles and then all dead load in each panel is carried within itself. When doing this type of cladding, it is advisable to use Lateral pinning when the panel size is greater in depth than 500mm.

These shelf angles are in 4 only sizes as shown below (come with expanding concrete bolt to suit and must be installed correctly):

  • SB-1 suits 20 – 30mm cavity.

  • SB-2 suits 35 – 55 mm cavity.

  • SB-3 suits 55 – 75 mm cavity.

  • SB-4 suits 80 – 130 mm cavity.

Extreme StoneClip

The need to carry bigger loads, meaning to clad bigger and thicker panels of stone (20mm panels up to 3000mm x 1200mm and 30mm panels up to 3000mm x 1500mm). More and more of these panels are being hung in vertical positions instead of the traditional horizontal.

For StoneClip to be able to cope with these sizes of panels and to be engineering sound, the Extreme StoneClip range was developed. The Extreme StoneClip has been developed around the same principal of two disc that turn independently of each other. They are constructed our of 3.0mm plate and the connecting rod is 10mm & 12mm thick. The loads that the Extreme StoneClip can carry safely per clip is greatly increased from a maximum of 21kg per clip in the 6mm adjustable version (working on a 12mm cavity using 30mm panels) up to a maximum load per clip of 81kg per clip per 30mm void. Refer to specifications & engineers details.

The StoneClips are fixed to the substrate using 1 or 2 x, 6.3 mm concrete concrete screw bolts. The number of fixings depends where the fixing positions fall when the panel is plumb or fixed as a lateral restraint.

The guidelines for fixing smaller panels using the Extreme StoneClip are that when using it to restrain panels of the size of 1000mm x 500mm x 30mm/40mm or 1000mm x 1000mm x 30mm/40mm, you should always use 2 per side in horizontal cladding even though the load per fixing comes down to 27kg and 20kg in the 1000mm x 500mm panel using a 40mm void.

Extreme StoneClips are designed to be used with SB-3 and SB-4 shelf angles (see above).

Care needs to be taken when installing recess for shaft to accommodate right thickness.
